Turbotax unemployment update6/16/2023 ![]() For example, I didnt know you could deduct interest you pay on a credit if you use it strictly for business. I feel more in control of my finances this way as well, you make better decisions throughout the year knowing how to do things to get the max out of your expenses and deductions. It helped me find some things I didnt even realize I could deduct. It also works through if you use your vehicle for work other than commuting, everything you can think of and things you never thought of lol I think I end up using the standard deduction each time but you go through the whole process then it helps you decide which option would be best for you. Either way, they walk you through every step, with a little "?" you can click to get more info about everything along the way. I'm a massage therapist with no employees so my taxes are fairly simple. They will suggest upgrading to +Max which offers audit protection and access to a live consultant for an extra $50+, I find that unnecessary but could be worth it for piece of mind, itll still he cheaper than an accountant. I believe I paid around $120 last year but I was just on there the other day and they were having a sale o think for only $60. I know they got some heat for making it hard to find the free version but their service in general has been great for me. This will be my 3rd year using Turbotax Self employed. Tl dr Tried to file my taxes, TT said I no longer qualified for the free version because of 1099-g, found link above which is still TT and was able to file for free, saving me $80. SO, at the very least, check the freefile site and see if you qualify. It still imported all my info that I'd filled out on the main website and even had a popup ask me if I really wanted to switch to the freefile version. Something in my gut told me to search around and I ended up coming across: which is the IRS freefile program which delivered by fucking TurboTax. ![]() So I almost said fuck it and just went ahead with it. I tried my best to go back through and make sure it was my 1099-g causing this and removing it did allow me to go back to file for free. After filling everything out and getting ready to send, TT goes to a screen saying that I no longer qualify for the free version do to "too many schedules" and I have no choice but to upgrade to the deluxe version ($80) if I want to file with them. This year, I had to add my 1099-g for being on unemployment, like most of you guys will too. I usually just have a couple w-2's and that's about it. So I tried to file my taxes tonight and have been using the free version of TurboTax for the last 6 years with no problems.
